Our Project
This project as been created by Bruno Sartini and Valentina Pasqual, students from the master degree course in Digital Humanities of the University of Bologna.
It is the practical development of a web site, which deals with the Diplomatic Edition of an Old English translation of Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Angolrum By Bede. The whole project has been developed using HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript, so that each element has been manually added. We did not use any automated instruments as XML TEI.
The manuscript here analysed has been taken from Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford, collection: Western Manuscripts, shelfmark: Corpus Christi College MS 279B. You can access the original source here (pages 223-229).

We worked together choosing the best translation (
Source1 (pages 1,2),
Source2 (pages 349-354),
Source3). We divided it into sections according to the transcription in order to ensure an easier comprehension for the user.
Each member has then revised the other member’s work. Why an Old English Manuscript?
• Digital Edition of Old English manuscripts are limited on the internet. Often it is possible to find only a few online sources about an opera.
So, the aim of the project is to implement a website, which contains a great deal of information from general (to introduce the reader to the manuscript) and to more specific (connected to the manuscript itself to give to the reader a direct approach with the document).
Focusing on both types of knowledge enable users to have a complete view of the topic, approach the manuscript and its history at every level of understanding, choose the notions to read according to what they want to learn.
• The idea of "giving a complete, but clear amount of knowlege" has been maintained especially developing the section Edition: here user can enjoy the ancient manuscript, its transcription and translation in the same web page. It is a simple tool for making comparisons, studying, work on critical evaluations and so on.
Why "Historia Ecclesiastica"?
Our decision to work on a section of this particular text as been made because during our bachelor degree we took a German Philology Course. During the course it was focused on the English version of "Ecclesiastical History" by Bede and in particular on the "Cædmon Hymn"’s translation from Old English to Italian (contained in the 24th chapter of the 4th book).
